Mitsubishi Shokuhin, Taken PrivateNarrow moat
Mitsubishi Corporation (8058) — moat facet
Mitsubishi paid ¥138 billion for the rest of a food wholesaler whose profit then nearly doubled.
Mitsubishi Shokuhin, a Japanese food wholesaler, is now wholly owned. Mitsubishi paid about ¥138 billion in a tender offer1, and the company's contribution rose from ¥11.2 billion to ¥21.0 billion in the year to March 20262.
A food wholesaler distributes groceries from manufacturers to supermarkets and convenience stores, including Lawson. Owning it outright gives Mitsubishi the whole margin on that flow and control over how it is invested.
In the April-June 2026 quarter the company also received a settlement payment related to litigation at Mitsubishi Shokuhin3, one of the items that lifted other income.
The take-private raised Mitsubishi's stake from 50.1% to 100%4, and the company's plan counted the expected profit contribution among its Enhance initiatives5.
The measure is the wholesaler's profit after the take-private. It should grow faster than it did as a listed subsidiary, or the ¥138 billion bought only the minority's share.
Contribution rose from ¥11.2 billion to ¥21.0 billion after the tender offer.
Taken private for about ¥138 billion; profit growth justifies the purchase of the minority.
