Thai Truck BuyersNarrow moat
Mitsubishi Corporation (8058) — moat facet
Mitsubishi's Thai truck distribution serves a market where its partner holds a third of pickups and over half of commercial vehicles.
One of Mitsubishi's most distinctive client bases is the Thai truck market. Through its Isuzu partnership, it distributes pickups and commercial vehicles in Thailand, where Isuzu's share was 35% of light commercial vehicles (63 thousand of 182 thousand units) and 56% of commercial vehicles (11 thousand of 19 thousand) in the year to March 20261. Tri Petch Isuzu Sales, 88.7% owned, earned ¥24.6 billion, up from ¥19.7 billion2.
The Thai and Indonesian automotive businesses together earned ¥64.8 billion, up from ¥60.9 billion3. In Indonesia, Mitsubishi Motors' share was 8.6%4.
This is a distribution business built over decades: dealers, finance, after-sales service and parts, around a brand that dominates its segment. Thai buyers of a pickup truck are buying a working vehicle for a farm or small business, and they are loyal to the brand that services it.
The same distribution model operates in Vietnam, where Mitsubishi Motors' share was 14.9%5, and in Indonesia, where Mitsubishi holds 51% of Mitsubishi Motors Krama Yudha Sales Indonesia6.
The measure is Isuzu's Thai share. A fall from 35% would say Chinese and other entrants are breaking into the market.
Tri Petch Isuzu's profit rose from ¥19.7 billion to ¥24.6 billion.
The client base's loyalty in one number; a falling share would signal new entrants.
