The transition Berkshire spent decades planning is no longer a future uncertainty to be reassured about — it is the live, present test of whether the institution can perform without the men who defined it, and the results are only beginning to come in.

The danger is that the proof will take years, during which every stumble is scrutinized and every ordinary result read as evidence the magic has gone. Abel inherits an enterprise in superb financial shape, but also sky-high expectations, a record cash pile demanding deployment, and a shareholder base and press watching intently for any sign that Berkshire without Buffett is merely a large, well-run holding company. Early quarters have already shown softer operating earnings, inviting exactly that narrative.

The reassurance is that the handover has, so far, been orderly and undramatic: Abel has signaled continuity of culture and capital discipline, resumed buybacks, and inherited a business built to run without heroics. But an owner should recognize that the succession is no longer a plan to trust but a performance to watch, that its verdict will emerge only over years, and that the market may withdraw the founder's premium well before the institution has had time to prove the faith warranted.
