⚠ A Single Point of JudgmentModerate threat
Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) — threat to the moat
One office multiplies its decisions — brilliant or merely ordinary.
The flow of all that cash to one center is a strength only because the center has, for sixty years, allocated it superbly — which is also the concentration risk. Berkshire funnels the earning power of dozens of businesses to a tiny headquarters and a handful of decision-makers, so the enterprise's returns depend enormously on a very small number of judgments made in one place. When those judgments are Buffett-caliber, the design is a marvel; when they are ordinary, the same design concentrates mediocrity just as efficiently.
The hazard has sharpened with succession. Allocation now sits with Greg Abel, the equity portfolio increasingly with Todd Combs and Ted Weschler1. They are capable, but the structure that once multiplied a genius's decisions will now multiply theirs, for better or worse, across a trillion-dollar base. A few poor large allocations, compounded over years, would matter as much on the downside as the great ones did on the up.
This is an inherent feature of the centralized model rather than a flaw to be fixed, and Berkshire softens it by keeping much of the return in the quality of businesses it already owns. But an owner should recognize that betting on Berkshire is, to a real degree, betting that a small group in Omaha keeps allocating capital better than the market — a bet that was nearly certain under Buffett and is merely hopeful under those who follow.
