⚠ Holding a Slow Mistake Too LongLow threat

Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.B) — threat to the moat

Loyalty to a holding can quietly become denial that the thesis broke.

The long horizon is a strength when a business keeps compounding and a weakness when it quietly rots, and Berkshire's instinct to hold forever can shade into holding a mistake far past the point of recognizing it. A permanent-capital owner that prides itself on never selling has, by design, a high bar for admitting an investment has broken — admirable when the thesis holds, costly when it doesn't. Patience and denial can wear the same face.

The record shows the hazard is real. Berkshire has stuck with holdings — certain airlines before selling at a loss, a large stake in a packaged-foods maker that stagnated for years, an aging computing giant that never delivered — longer than a colder eye might have. The very virtues that make Berkshire a wonderful long-term owner, its loyalty and aversion to churn, can become liabilities when an industry is being disrupted and the right move is to leave.

This is a modest, self-correcting danger rather than a structural one. Berkshire's diversification means no single stale holding sinks the whole, and it has, when finally convinced, cut even large and long-held positions. But an owner should not assume that 'long-term' always means 'right'; occasionally it means a mistake held with conviction, and the discipline to tell the difference is what the horizon demands and does not guarantee — a discipline now inherited rather than founding1.
