Amazon (AMZN) — the variant view

AWS grew 37% at a 39% margin, but $53 billion of Anthropic gains made up most of net income and free cash flow turned negative.

Amazon's second quarter of 2026, to the end of June, is easiest to read as three reports stapled together. The first is the operating business, and it was the best in years. Revenue rose 20% to $200.6 billion and operating income 43% to $27.5 billion, a 13.7% margin1. Amazon Web Services grew 37% to $42.2 billion, its fastest growth in eighteen quarters, and earned $16.6 billion at a 39.4% margin against 32.9% a year earlier2; that was 60.5% of the company's operating income in the quarter3. Advertising grew 26% to $19.8 billion, faster than in any of the five quarters before it4.

Profit grew twice as fast as sales, but shipping costs grew faster than the units they carried.

The retail half did well too, with a caveat about the calendar. Online stores grew 15% and third-party seller services 16%, against 9% and 12% in the first quarter5. Amazon's own guidance says third-quarter growth would be nearly 400 basis points higher excluding Prime Day in both years6, a polite way of saying the event did not land in the same quarter as last year, so some of the second quarter's strength is timing rather than trend. The cost side deserves the same attention. Shipping costs rose 19% while paid units rose 17%, the first quarter of the six Amazon now tabulates in which cost outran volume7, and about $640 million of tariff refunds reduced the quarter's cost of sales8.

The second report is the accounting one. Net income was $62.6 billion, or $5.75 a share, but it included $53.4 billion of non-operating income, primarily from Amazon's investments in Anthropic9. Upward revaluations of Amazon's private holdings came to $50.5 billion in the quarter alone10. None of that was earned by selling or shipping anything: it is the mechanical result of a private company's price rising, and it reverses if the price falls. Operating income is the number that describes the business.

The third report is the spending. Amazon bought $54.2 billion of property and equipment in the quarter11, and over twelve months net capital spending of $169.0 billion exceeded operating cash flow of $161.4 billion, leaving free cash flow at minus $7.6 billion against plus $18.2 billion a year earlier12. What the money is buying is on the page too. The AWS backlog reached $496 billion, from $244 billion at the end of 2025, after OpenAI expanded its commitment by $100 billion over eight years and Anthropic by more than $100 billion over ten13.

Does the quarter change the moat? It strengthens the part that earns the money: AWS is growing faster at a higher margin than a year ago, and advertising is compounding on top of a store that grew with it. It also adds two cautions. The headline profit is mostly a mark on an investment, and the demand behind roughly half the backlog comes from two laboratories that are also Amazon's partners. The next test is the one the guidance sets up, operating income of $22.5 to $26.5 billion in the third quarter14. If AWS holds its margin near 39% while growth stays above 30%, the capital budget is earning its keep; if the margin slides back toward last year's 33% as the new data centres start depreciating, the free-cash-flow gap will take longer to close than the growth rate suggests.
