Breadth is a strength, but it invites a particular kind of attack: the specialist that does one important thing better than the generalist. Companies like Snowflake in data warehousing and Databricks in analytics¹ and AI have won large, valuable workloads by being best-of-breed at a single high-value task, and by running across all the clouds so the customer need not commit to one. Each such specialist peels a lucrative slice off the comprehensive platform.

The danger is that the most valuable, highest-margin workloads are exactly the ones specialists target, and exactly the ones AWS most wants to keep. If enterprises increasingly assemble their stack from best-of-breed pieces rather than defaulting to AWS's own services, AWS is left providing the commodity compute and storage underneath while others capture the premium layers on top — a worse business than owning the whole.

The consolation: AWS still captures the underlying infrastructure even when a specialist runs on top, and it competes hard with its own comparable services, often good enough and better integrated for customers who value simplicity over the very best tool. Many enterprises prefer one platform and one bill to stitching specialists together.

It rates moderate. Best-of-breed unbundling genuinely siphons some of the highest-value workloads and caps how much of the premium stack AWS can own — but AWS keeps the infrastructure beneath the specialists, and its breadth-and-simplicity pitch still wins the large majority of customers who would rather not assemble their own stack.
