Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) — threat to the moat

The manufacturing half of AMD's advantage belongs to the foundry — and every rival can rent it too.

The engineering-and-manufacturing story that powered AMD's comeback carries a structural vulnerability at its core: the manufacturing half of the advantage is not AMD's to own. AMD's chips are built by TSMC, and it was TSMC's leading-edge process — not any factory of AMD's — that gave AMD's designs their footing over a stumbling Intel. That was a real advantage while Intel's own fabs faltered. But it is an advantage rented on the open market, and every rival that matters rents it too: Nvidia, Apple, and the hyperscalers' chip teams all build at TSMC, so against its most important competitors AMD has no manufacturing edge at all — only parity, and often less priority than the giants who can command TSMC's best capacity.

This dependence has two edges. It leaves AMD's most advanced products hostage to a single supplier's capacity, pricing, and roadmap — and to the geopolitical risk of that supplier's concentration in Taiwan — while giving AMD less bargaining power than Apple or Nvidia in the competition for leading-edge wafers and advanced packaging, which have been genuine bottlenecks in the AI boom. And it means the design brilliance that is genuinely AMD's own must carry the whole competitive load, because the manufacturing that complements it is available to everyone. AMD's fabless strategy was correct and remains sensible; owning fabs would be far worse. But an honest map of the moat must mark the manufacturing advantage as rented, shared, and concentrated — a strength against yesterday's Intel, a wash against tomorrow's Nvidia, and a dependence AMD does not control — the same TSMC that fabs for Nvidia holds 90%-plus of the leading edge1.
