✦ Helios & the Rack-Scale AnswerNarrow moat

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) — the future bets

Helios is AMD finally selling the machine instead of the chip — 72 GPUs to an open rack, priced at 30% more tokens per dollar, with five giants signed.

Nvidia's deepest advantage was never one chip; it was the rack — silicon, networking, and software sold as a single machine. Helios is AMD's first true answer: an open rack-scale platform lashing 72 Instinct MI455X GPUs into one system, launched at Advancing AI in July 2026 with first shipments at the end of the third quarter and volume ramping into 20271. The adopter list did the arguing: Microsoft signed on at launch, joining Meta, OpenAI, Oracle and Anthropic2 — five of the largest AI buyers on earth, committed before the ramp.

Nvidia's real moat was the rack, not the chip — Helios is AMD conceding that point and finally building the whole machine.

Two choices distinguish the machine. It is built on open standards — an OCP-contributed rack design and open interconnects — a deliberate wedge against Nvidia's proprietary NVLink world, aimed at buyers who never want to be locked in again. And it is priced to win on economics rather than crown-jewel performance: AMD's pitch is roughly 30% more tokens per dollar for frontier inference, the argument that has always moved hyperscalers.

What Helios has not yet proven is volume. Shipping a rack is harder than shipping a GPU — power, cooling, interconnect yield, software maturity all fail at system scale — and Nvidia's NVL72 racks are a generation ahead on the learning curve while its next platform is already ramping. Watch the only figure that settles it: racks delivered and revenue recognized through 2027, against the deployment schedules OpenAI, Meta and Microsoft have named. A rack in a keynote is marketing; ten thousand in data centers is a second source.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Microsoft joining at launch — alongside Meta, OpenAI, Oracle and Anthropic — is the breadth of adoption AMD's AI business never previously commanded, and the open-rack design recruits every buyer tired of proprietary lock-in. Widening from a low base: Nvidia's rack machine is a generation ahead, so the claim is credibility, not parity. Racks delivered through 2027 will say which.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Data-center lease guarantees
$4.1B at June 2026, plus $9.5B of leases signed after the quarter

Selling racks has drawn AMD into guaranteeing the buildings they go into. The figure growing faster than Instinct revenue would mean AMD is financing its own demand.
