✦ The Future BetsNarrow moat

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) — the future bets

AMD's future bets all try to contract scale before earning it — six OpenAI gigawatts, 72-GPU racks, a 2-nanometer first and a sovereign JV, every one dated and gradable.

For twenty years AMD's future was a simple question: can the smaller company survive? The future bets on this page ask a different one: can the perennial challenger convert an AI boom into the thing it has never had — a second buyer of last resort for AI compute, at scale, with contracts?

Four dated, public, gradable bets — the difference from past AMD promises is that every one of these self-grades on a visible calendar.

The anchor bet arrived October 6, 2025: OpenAI committed to deploy 6 gigawatts of Instinct GPUs across generations, beginning with a gigawatt of MI450s in the second half of 2026 — paid for, in part, with a warrant for up to 160 million AMD shares that vests only as deployments and share-price milestones land1. The delivery vehicle is Helios, AMD's first rack-scale system — 72 MI455X GPUs per rack — launched in July 2026 with Microsoft joining Meta, OpenAI, Oracle and Anthropic as named adopters2. Beneath both sits silicon: EPYC Venice, the industry's first high-performance chip in production ramp on TSMC's 2-nanometer node3. And alongside them runs the sovereign experiment — a $10 billion joint venture with Saudi Arabia's HUMAIN to build 500 megawatts of AI capacity across the Kingdom and the United States4.

Read the pattern honestly: every one of these is a bet that scale can be contracted before it is earned. Nvidia built its position product by product; AMD is trying to leap the queue with structure — equity warrants, joint ventures, rack-scale systems sold as systems. That is what a challenger with one chance at an inflection should do, and it is also how execution risk compounds: the 6 gigawatts, the racks, the 2nm yields and the Saudi megawatts all have to land on roughly the same calendar.

The market has already paid for much of this — which is why the grading must be literal. Watch one number above all: the first OpenAI gigawatt actually energized in the second half of 2026. Every quarter it slips, the warrant stays unvested, the racks stay promises, and a 159-times multiple keeps discounting a future that hasn't shipped. The day it lands, AMD stops being the alternative and becomes the second source the industry has begged for.

Moat trajectory: Widening

In ten months AMD signed the largest customer commitment in its history, shipped its first rack-scale system with five named giants aboard, became first to production on TSMC's newest node, and opened a sovereign second front. Each bet is dated, public and gradable — the challenger's position is strengthening on every axis that can be observed. The direction reverses only if the first OpenAI gigawatt slips or Helios stalls at low volume.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Unconditional purchase commitments
$30.3B at June 2026, $17.4B of it due in the rest of 2026

Mostly wafers, substrates and components for the ramp. Commitments rising faster than revenue would mean AMD is carrying more of the AI build-out's supply risk.
