VeriSign (VRSN) — threat to the moat

The escalator averages 4.7% a year. A base falling faster than that ends the trick, and there is no third lever.

Price beat units for three years. It cannot do it indefinitely.

Domain name base, year-end (millions)158.82019173.42021173.82022172.72023169.02024173.52025179.1Q2 2026The escalator averages about 4.7% a year across a full six-year cycle. That is the tolerance.
Three years of decline inside a decade of growth — and revenue never noticed.

Between the end of 2021 and the end of 2024 the domain name base fell 2.5%, from 173.4 million to 169.0 million, while revenue rose 17.3%.1 That is the moat working. It is also a specific arithmetic relationship with a specific breaking point: the price rises about 7% in four years out of six, so the average annual increase available is closer to 4.7%. A base declining faster than that produces falling revenue, and there is no third lever.

The 2023–24 decline ran at roughly 1% a year, comfortably inside the tolerance. But two of the three causes — Chinese demand collapsing and U.S. registrars cutting promotional volume — were cyclical, and the third was not. Cheap new gTLDs taking the marginal registration is structural, and that field is growing 34.0% a year.2

The base has recovered to 179.1 million, up 5.1%, and guidance is for 5.2% to 6.0% growth in 2026.3 The tolerance is not being tested today.

Two consecutive years of base decline while the price ladder runs would test it, and would say something the 2023–24 episode did not.
