The AI Demand SurgeWide moat
TSMC (TSM) — moat facet
The whole AI industry — every accelerator that matters — must come through TSMC's fabs.
The artificial-intelligence boom has turned TSMC's customer lock-in from strong to near-absolute, because there is simply no other place to build the chips the AI race requires. Nvidia's accelerators, the custom AI silicon of Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta1, and the chips of the AI startups all depend on TSMC's leading-edge manufacturing and advanced packaging — no alternative can deliver the performance, yield, and volume the AI build-out demands. The entire industry racing to build artificial intelligence must, whether it likes it or not, come through TSMC, which sits at the deepest chokepoint of the most important technology trend of the age.
This has made TSMC's most important customers more dependent on it than ever, and given TSMC extraordinary leverage: it allocates its scarce leading-edge and packaging capacity among the giants competing for AI supremacy, all of whom need more than it can immediately supply. The result has been surging demand, rising prices, record margins, and a backlog of capacity commitments — HPC and AI now account for roughly two-thirds of TSMC's revenue. The AI surge is the moat's most powerful current tailwind, deepening the customer dependence and the pricing power simultaneously. The flip side is that this same concentration in AI ties TSMC's fortunes to the durability of the AI boom — but as long as the world races to build AI, every competitor in that race is, first, a customer at TSMC's door, and that is as strong a demand-side lock-in as any company could wish for.
Widening. AI has turned the customer lock-in near-absolute — Nvidia and the hyperscalers depend utterly on TSMC for leading-edge and packaging — deepening the dependence and pricing power together, HPC now ~two-thirds of revenue.
The hyperscalers' custom AI chips and Nvidia's GPUs are all made here. HPC growth this fast says the surge is flowing to TSMC; a slowdown would show either demand easing or work moving elsewhere.
