⚠ Qualification Runs Out at Every GenerationModerate threat
SK hynix (SKHY) — threat to the moat
Every advantage in this business is re-tendered on the accelerator maker's schedule, and the incumbent's only privilege is being asked first.
The strongest thing about HBM economics is that a stack is qualified into an accelerator long before it ships, and qualifications are not casually reopened. The weakest thing is that they are reopened on a schedule — every generation, without exception.
Each new accelerator architecture is a fresh competition. The customer re-specifies, re-tests and re-allocates, and the incumbent's advantage is reputational and operational rather than contractual. HBM3E gave way to HBM4, which SK hynix developed in 2025 and began shipping in volume in the second quarter of 20261; there will be an HBM5, and the process will run again.
This is why the generational cadence is the whole competitive contest. Arrive first with adequate yields and you take the majority of a generation. Arrive second, even with a technically superior part, and you take what the leader could not supply. There is no accumulated position that carries you through a generation you lost — which is precisely how SK hynix took the lead in the first place, from a competitor that was larger than it.
What SK hynix has that a challenger does not is the track record: a customer choosing a supplier for a product launch is buying certainty of supply more than specification, and past delivery is the only evidence available.
The thing to watch is not this generation's share but the first qualification announcements of the next one. By the time share moves, the decision is eighteen months old.
