The HBM LeadNarrow moat
SK hynix (SKHY) — moat facet
Being first to a product everyone could see coming buys years of margin, not permanence -- and 56.4 percent of HBM is a majority that arrived from a great deal higher.
High-bandwidth memory is the reason this company is valued the way it is, and the reason is worth stating precisely. An AI accelerator is not limited by how fast it can calculate. It is limited by how fast it can be fed. HBM solves the feeding problem by stacking DRAM dies vertically and connecting them straight through the silicon, which puts enormous bandwidth very close to the processor.
SK hynix got there first. It built the first HBM using through-silicon via packaging, commercialised HBM3E in 2024, and developed HBM4 in 20251. That sequence matters more than any single generation, because HBM is not sold the way ordinary DRAM is sold. It is designed into an accelerator, qualified against that accelerator's thermal and electrical behaviour, and locked in twelve to eighteen months before the product ships. A customer who has qualified your stack does not re-open the decision because a rival quoted two percent less.
The result is a share of 56.4% of the HBM market in the first quarter of 20262, in a product category that Gartner expects to grow from about US$33 billion in 2025 to US$86 billion in 20273.
The company's own framing of why it wins is unromantic and probably right: not just the technology, but the mass-production capability and the track record behind it — which is what a customer betting a launch schedule actually cares about4.
The limit is in the number itself. A 56.4% share means 43.6% is going to somebody else, and that somebody is two of the largest semiconductor manufacturers on earth. The metric that tests this page is HBM share by revenue, measured every quarter, and the direction it has been moving is down.
Being roughly a generation early on high-bandwidth memory was always going to be worth less each year, because two competitors with comparable fabs and every incentive were going to close some of the gap. 56.4% is still first place and it plainly arrived from higher.
IDC's measure, cited in SK hynix's own prospectus. This is the number the whole valuation rests on, because ordinary DRAM earns a commodity return over a cycle. If it falls below half, SK hynix is no longer the HBM company but the largest of three.
