⚠ Markets Revenue Is Not a Franchise, It Is a YearModerate threat
JPMorgan Chase (JPM) — threat to the moat
Equity markets revenue rose 86 percent in a quarter on conditions nobody at the firm controls, which is why banks trade at low multiples of peak earnings.
The revenue line that grew fastest is the one that deserves the least credit.
In the June 2026 quarter, JPMorgan's markets revenue rose 35% year on year, with equity markets up 86%1. That was attributed to elevated client activity, strong trading performance and demand for financing2 — conditions, not capabilities.
Trading revenue is a share of a pool whose size is set by volatility and volumes. A firm can grow its share, and JPMorgan has, but the pool itself can halve in a quiet year and there is nothing the firm can do about it. Investment banking fees behave the same way: they fell 5% in the fourth quarter of 20253 and rose 30% in the June 2026 quarter4 with no change in the franchise between.
This is the specific reason banks trade at low multiples of peak earnings. The market is not disputing the numbers; it is declining to capitalise the part of them that came from a good year.
What is genuinely durable underneath is the wallet-share position — first globally, 9.3% year to date5 — because share persists even when the pool shrinks.
The falsifier is share rather than revenue. Watch the wallet-share ranking through a quiet year; that is when the franchise and the environment separate.
