Micron Technology (MU) — threat to the moat

No brand, no lock-in, no switching costs — strip away the oligopoly and the product competes on price alone.

Beneath every discussion of oligopoly and HBM lies a fact that no amount of consolidation can change: memory is, fundamentally, a commodity. A gigabyte of standard DRAM from Micron is essentially interchangeable with a gigabyte from Samsung or SK Hynix; there is no brand that commands a premium, no proprietary standard that locks customers in, no switching cost that holds a buyer in place. Customers qualify multiple suppliers precisely so they can buy from whoever is cheapest, and in the standard-memory market the product competes on price and availability, not on any durable differentiation. This commodity nature is the ceiling on Micron's moat, and it is why the rating is narrow rather than wide however impressive the current numbers.

Both memories moved together: the price of a commodity, not the premium of one product.

The commodity reality is what makes memory so violently cyclical and its pricing power so conditional. Because the product cannot be differentiated, prices are set almost entirely by the supply-demand balance, which swings wildly as capacity (added in years-long, lumpy increments) chases demand (which surges and stalls with the technology cycle). When supply is tight, commodity prices soar and margins with them; when supply is loose, prices collapse toward cash cost, and there is nothing — no brand, no contract, no lock-in — to arrest the fall. HBM partially escapes this, being more specialized and contract-priced, which is exactly why it is so valuable and so central to the bull case. But the bulk of memory remains a commodity, and an investor in Micron is, at bottom, an investor in a commodity producer — a very good one, in a rationally-structured market, at a spectacular moment in the cycle, but a commodity producer nonetheless — a gigabyte of Micron DRAM is interchangeable with Samsung's or SK Hynix's1 — with all the cyclicality and all the limits on moat that the word implies.
