Samsung: The Rival That Can Lose Money LongestNarrow moat
Micron Technology (MU) — moat facet
A year of memory losses that would threaten Micron's existence is, for Samsung, a bad year in one division.
Samsung is the largest memory manufacturer in the world and the one competitor whose staying power Micron cannot match. Memory is one business inside an enormous conglomerate spanning phones, displays, foundry and consumer electronics — so a period of memory losses that would threaten Micron's existence is, for Samsung, a bad year in one division.
That asymmetry matters because of how competition works here. The product is a commodity within a specification, capacity decisions are made years ahead, and the industry's history is of everyone expanding at once and then discovering there is too much supply. Micron's own filing notes that competitors may use aggressive pricing to obtain share1. In that game, the deepest balance sheet sets the floor.
What has changed is that Samsung has recently been the one struggling to execute at the leading edge, particularly in high-bandwidth memory, which removed some of the pricing pressure that its scale would otherwise have created. That is a reprieve rather than a resolution: a Samsung that solves its technical problems is a Samsung with both the capacity and the incentive to take share back.
Watch industry-wide capacity announcements rather than any single competitor's share. Memory downturns are caused by collective capacity decisions, not by one company's aggression, and the warning always appears in capital spending plans a year or more before it appears in price.
Samsung remains larger, more diversified and better able to absorb losses than Micron, and has recently been the one struggling to execute at the leading edge — which removed pricing pressure its scale would otherwise have created. That is a reprieve, not a resolution. A Samsung that fixes its technical problems has both the capacity and the incentive to take share back.
Memory is one division of Samsung and all of Micron, so Samsung can outlast a price war. The gap narrowing would show Micron gaining ground; widening, that Samsung's scale is pulling away.
