✦ SOCAMM2 & the Low-Power Data CenterThin moat
Micron Technology (MU) — the future bets
SOCAMM2 is Micron inventing the socket instead of filling one — phone memory rebuilt for the rack, with the category's kingmaker as co-author.
Micron's quietest bet is an attempt to do what almost never happens in memory: invent the socket instead of filling one. SOCAMM2 takes LPDDR5X — the low-power DRAM that lives in phones — and rebuilds it as a data-center module. The 256-gigabyte samples that began shipping in March 2026 are the industry's highest-capacity low-power modules, built on the first monolithic 32-gigabit LPDDR5X die on Micron's 1-gamma node, drawing roughly a third the power of an equivalent RDIMM1. In AI inference, where feeding the model dominates the power bill, the numbers land: about 2.3 times faster time to first token on long-context work, and three times the performance per watt in CPU-attached use.
The strategic tell is the co-designer. SOCAMM2 was developed with Nvidia and ramps alongside HBM4 into the Vera Rubin generation of AI platforms2 — meaning the module enters the market pre-installed in the industry's reference architecture rather than begging for adoption. First to market in a new form factor, with the category's kingmaker as co-author, is the strongest opening position a memory maker can hold.
It is still an opening position. Samples are not share; SK Hynix and Samsung will build to the same form factor the moment volumes justify it, and a socket only compounds into a franchise if Micron's early co-design advantage persists across generations. Watch whether SOCAMM spreads beyond Nvidia's platforms into general server designs, and whether Micron still holds the capacity lead when the rivals' modules arrive. Inventing the socket is rare; keeping it is rarer.
First to market with the highest-capacity module and Nvidia as co-designer is a genuine head start, but samples are not share: the form factor is young, rivals will build to it the moment volumes justify, and no server socket has ever belonged to one memory maker for long. Holding steady until SOCAMM either spreads beyond Nvidia reference platforms — or gets commoditized the day it succeeds.
SOCAMM2 is LPDDR memory built for servers, the technology this unit sells into phones and PCs. Margins this high in consumer memory show how tight supply is across all DRAM.
