Small-Business ReachWide moat
Meta Platforms (META) — moat facet
Millions of small advertisers with nowhere better to spend — breadth no rival matches.
The unglamorous heart of Meta's advertising is the small business: the millions of gyms, boutiques, restaurants, and one-person online shops for which Meta's platforms are simply the best and often the only practical way to find customers. For these advertisers there is no substitute — they cannot afford a media agency, and no other channel lets them target their exact customer so cheaply — and that indispensability is the foundation of Meta's pricing power.
The fragmentation of this base is the secret to its strength. Because Meta's revenue comes from millions of small advertisers rather than a handful of giant ones, no single customer has the leverage to negotiate the price down or to walk away with a meaningful chunk of revenue. The advertiser needs Meta far more than Meta needs any one advertiser, which is the opposite of the position most media businesses find themselves in.
This reach also makes the revenue remarkably resilient and diversified. A business dependent on a few big accounts is fragile; one spread across millions of small ones is a broad, stable base that no single defection can dent. The long tail of small advertisers is both the growth engine and the ballast of the whole enterprise.
It is the least visible part of the moat and one of the strongest, because it rests on genuine indispensability: for a vast population of small businesses, Meta is not one option among many but the irreplaceable connection to their customers, and irreplaceability is what pricing power is made of. Meta counts its advertisers in the millions1.
Widening. Millions of small businesses advertise on Meta because it's the one place they can reach precise audiences cheaply without a marketing department, and AI tools like Advantage+ increasingly let them just hand over a goal and a budget and let the system do the rest. Lowering the skill needed to advertise pulls in businesses that never could before, widening the advertiser base. As the tools get smarter, the long tail of advertisers grows. A widening pool of demand for Meta's ad inventory.
Meta industrialized advertising for businesses TV never returned calls from: some ten million advertisers, most tiny, with nowhere else offering this reach at this price. Their alternatives are the test — watch small-business budgets shifting to TikTok, Amazon or retail networks.
