Apple: The Landlord Who Charged Meta Ten Billion DollarsThin moat

Meta Platforms (META) — moat facet

Apple is not a competitor for users — it is the landlord, and it collected roughly $10 billion by changing one setting.

Apple does not compete with Meta for users, for time, or for advertisers. It simply owns the device Meta's products run on, and in 2021 it exercised that ownership: App Tracking Transparency required apps to ask permission before following users across other apps and sites, most users declined, and Meta estimated the cost at roughly $10 billion of annual revenue1.

Two years of falling ad prices followed Apple's tracking prompt.

This is the most instructive competitive event in Meta's history, because Meta had no answer available. Its usual response to a competitor — copy the product, deploy it to three and a half billion people — is meaningless against a platform owner. Meta could not build its own iPhone, could not decline to be on iOS, and could not appeal to anyone with the power to reverse it. It rebuilt its targeting around first-party signals and AI modelling instead, which took years and worked well enough that ad prices are rising again.

The deeper lesson is structural: a business whose product reaches customers through somebody else's platform holds its moat at that platform's discretion. Meta's AI glasses ambition, covered in the Future Bets, is best understood as an attempt to stop being a tenant.

Watch what Apple does next with privacy defaults, and watch Meta's progress on hardware. The first is the risk; the second is the only durable answer to it, and it is years from mattering.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Apple has not repeated anything on the scale of App Tracking Transparency, and Meta has largely rebuilt its targeting around first-party data and modelling. Stable rather than improving, because nothing about the underlying relationship has changed: Meta still reaches its users through a device somebody else controls, and that party can change the rules again whenever it chooses.
