Scale of EngagementWide moat
Meta Platforms (META) — moat facet
3.6 billion people daily — time spent no challenger can quickly amass.
The billions of hours people spend on Meta's apps each day — 3.58 billion daily users supplied them at the end of 20251 — are the engine's fuel, and their scale is itself a moat. Engagement is not merely how Meta makes money; it is how Meta gathers the data that makes the targeting sharp and the ranking good. Attention and data are two sides of one coin, and Meta commands more of both than almost anyone.
That scale cannot be manufactured on demand, which is what makes it defensive. A rival cannot simply decide to have billions of hours of daily attention; it must win that attention person by person, against the network effects and the polished, AI-tuned experience that keep people where they are. The engagement is the accumulated result of twenty years of building, and it renews every single day.
Engagement at this scale also feeds directly back into itself. The more time people spend, the more data Meta gathers, the better its models rank content, the more engaging the experience becomes, and the more time people spend. It is the same flywheel seen from the attention side, and its size is precisely what a smaller competitor, starting with less attention and thus less data, cannot match.
It is the quiet quantity beneath every other advantage: the targeting, the ranking, the advertising, and the AI all draw ultimately on the hours that billions of people give Meta's apps — hours that are the hardest thing of all for a challenger to take, because they are held in place by everything else the moat contains.
Daily users reached 3.60 billion in June 2026 but grew only 3%, after a first-quarter dip from shutdowns in Iran and Russia. At this scale growth comes from time and price, not people, which makes the base stable rather than widening.
Africa, Latin America and the Middle East hold much of the engagement and the least revenue per user. The fastest regional growth there says scale is still being converted into money.
