Sephora: A Completely Different CustomerNarrow moat

LVMH (MC) — moat facet

Sephora is the one place LVMH meets an ordinary consumer, and it is a retailer rather than a maison.

Selective Retailing, principally Sephora, is a large business inside LVMH1 that has almost nothing in common with the rest of it. Its customers buy cosmetics at accessible prices, in stores designed for browsing and sampling, and they number in the tens of millions rather than the hundreds of thousands.

Revenue down 2% reported and up 5% organic, with profit up 2%.

The strategic logic is that beauty is the entry point to luxury. A customer who buys a lipstick at eighteen may buy a handbag at thirty, and Sephora puts LVMH in front of a demographic that Louis Vuitton's stores never see. It also generates enormous quantities of data on what younger consumers actually buy, which is scarce information in an industry that otherwise sells to people it meets rarely.

The tension is that Sephora is a retailer, not a maison. It sells competitors' brands, competes on convenience and assortment, and is judged on same-store sales and footfall like any specialty chain. Its economics — and its vulnerabilities, including to online competition — belong to retail rather than to luxury, and it dilutes the group's margin profile while broadening its reach.

Watch Selective Retailing's margin against the group's. A widening gap would mean LVMH is buying customer access at an increasing cost — defensible strategically, and worth knowing the price of.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Sephora continues to give LVMH access to a demographic its maisons never meet and generates data the rest of the group cannot obtain. It also remains a retailer, judged on footfall and same-store sales, competing on convenience and assortment and diluting the group's margin profile. Neither better nor worse than a year ago.

Sephora is where LVMH meets ordinary consumers, and it is a retailer judged on footfall. Revenue growth that slows while beauty competition rises would show the group's broadest customer base weakening.
