✦ One and a Half Trillion Yen of Growth InvestmentNarrow moat
ITOCHU (8001) — the future bets
ITOCHU plans to invest almost twice as much this year as last, and had committed almost half by August.
ITOCHU plans growth investment of about ¥1.5 trillion in the year to March 2027, made up of about ¥1.2 trillion of new investment and about ¥300 billion of capital expenditure, against about ¥200 billion of exits1. By early August it had committed about ¥670 billion2.
The first quarter's investments included ¥134.1 billion for Hitachi Construction Machinery, ¥61.8 billion for ITOCHU-SHOKUHIN and ¥32.3 billion for Sun Frontier3, and exits of about ¥104 billion4.
The pace compares with ¥766.0 billion in the year to March 2025 and ¥838.0 billion in 20265. Net debt to equity is planned to rise to about 0.66.
The company planned total shareholder returns of 64% of profit for the year7, alongside the investment. Both are being funded at once.
The measure is the share of the plan completed at year-end and the return it earns. Investing the full amount at returns below 8% would add assets without adding value.
About ¥670 billion committed of about ¥1.5 trillion planned.
The pace of deployment; the return on it decides whether it creates value.
