Specialty ProductsNarrow moat

ExxonMobil (XOM) — moat facet

The one segment with pricing power: 35.4% on 2.7% of the capital.

Specialty Products is the smallest segment by sales and the best by return. It sold $18,407 million to outside customers in 2023, $18,253 million in 2024 and $17,771 million in 2025.1

More than five times Energy Products' earnings on each dollar of sales.

What is inside the segment is finished lubricants, including Mobil 1, basestocks, waxes, synthetics and elastomers, and newer products such as Proxxima resins and carbon materials.2

Earnings have been steady. The segment earned $2,714 million in 2023, $3,052 million in 2024 and $2,857 million in 2025.3 On 2025's sales that is about 16 cents per dollar, against about 3 cents in Energy Products.4

The filing explains 2025's decline as spending rather than weakness: higher expenses to develop markets for carbon materials and Proxxima resins cost $0.2 billion, and unfavourable exchange rates another $0.2 billion, while margin added $40 million.5

It is paid for a brand and a specification, and it needs very little capital. The segment employed $8,073 million in 2025 and returned 35.4%; the American half returned 59.3%, down from 77.4%.6 The page Two Point Seven Per Cent of the Capital, Nine Per Cent of the Profit makes the case.

The June 2026 quarter was up. The segment earned $956 million against $780 million a year earlier, with the non-U.S. half at $669 million against $489 million while the American half was flat.7

The outlook is whether the new products add to a mature lubricants business or only to its costs.

This is a narrow moat, and the only part of ExxonMobil with pricing power. The figure to follow is the American return on capital, 59.3% in 2025. A further fall towards the non-U.S. 27.4% would mean the brand premium is narrowing at home.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Earnings of $956M against $780M in the June 2026 quarter; the American half flat, the non-U.S. half up.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Specialty Products earnings, first half
$1,607M in H1 2026, from $1,435M

The segment with pricing power should grow through the cycle; a decline in a strong half would mean the new products are only adding cost.
