Saudi Aramco and OPEC+: The Competitor That Sets the PriceWide moat

ExxonMobil (XOM) — moat facet

Three million barrels a day of spare capacity, held idle by a ministry, against a company that earns $700 million per dollar of Brent.

Everything else on this page is a company ExxonMobil competes with. This one is a counterparty that decides what ExxonMobil earns, and no amount of operational excellence changes that.

Saudi Arabia's idle capacity alone is more than half of ExxonMobil's output.

The scale is not comparable. Saudi Aramco's total hydrocarbon production averaged 12.9 million oil-equivalent barrels a day in 2025, rising to 13.2 million in the fourth quarter as OPEC+ voluntary cuts unwound1, against ExxonMobil's 4,736 thousand2. Aramco is worth about $1.68 trillion3 against ExxonMobil's $652.6 billion4. It declared a base dividend of about $21.9 billion for a single quarter of 20265; ExxonMobil paid $17,231 million for the whole of 20256.

But the number that matters is not production or value. Saudi Arabia carries roughly three million barrels a day of spare capacity, the largest single-country buffer in the world by a wide margin, and OPEC+ spare capacity in total exceeds five million barrels a day — the highest reading since 20097. Three million barrels a day is more than half of everything ExxonMobil produces, held idle, available to be brought to market at the decision of a government.

Run that through ExxonMobil's own published sensitivity. A one dollar change in Brent is worth about $700 million a year of after-tax Upstream earnings8. A decision taken in Riyadh that moves the oil price ten dollars moves ExxonMobil's earnings by roughly seven billion — more than the combined annual earnings of Energy Products and Specialty Products and Chemical Products9. There is no operational response available.

This is also why the whole industry's cost discipline works differently from cost discipline elsewhere. When ExxonMobil lowers its cost per barrel it does not take share from Aramco, whose barrels cost a fraction of anybody's. It moves itself further from the point on the cost curve where production stops being worth making.

The rating on this sub is wide, and the wide moat belongs to the other party. Aramco produces two and a half times what ExxonMobil produces and sits behind a government able to withhold three million barrels a day — which is the definition of pricing power, and the one thing ExxonMobil does not have.

It all reduces to realised Brent, which ExxonMobil publishes: $82.62 in 2023, $80.76 in 2024, $69.06 in 202510. Every argument about ExxonMobil's moat is a second-order effect on that series.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Saudi Arabia's spare capacity has risen to roughly three million barrels a day, the highest reading since 2009, as OPEC+ voluntary cuts unwind. The relationship has not changed in fifty years: the cartel decides the price and ExxonMobil decides its cost. This one is stable because it is structural.

The number that tests this moat
Third-party estimate
Saudi spare capacity against ExxonMobil production
~3.0 million against 4.7 million barrels a day

More than half of everything ExxonMobil produces, held idle and released at the decision of a ministry, inside OPEC+ spare capacity above five million barrels a day — the highest reading since 2009. At $700 million of after-tax earnings per dollar of Brent, a ten-dollar decision in Riyadh is worth more than three of ExxonMobil’s four segments combined.
