The Revenue LinesNarrow moat
Eli Lilly (LLY) — moat facet
Two brands of one molecule are two-thirds of the company; the other three lines are a fading predecessor, a maturing cancer drug and a long tail.
Lilly reports revenue by product, and five lines tell the story. In 2025 Mounjaro brought in $22,965 million, Zepbound $13,542 million, Verzenio $5,723 million and Trulicity a little over $3 billion; everything else together came to about $20 billion of the $65,179 million total.12 In the second quarter of 2026 Mounjaro and Zepbound alone were $14,871 million of $22,974 million, about 65%.34
The two largest lines are the same molecule, tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro for diabetes and as Zepbound for obesity in the United States, Canada and Japan.5 Together they went from $482 million in 2022 to $36.5 billion in 2025.678
Lilly does not report profit by product, so every page here treats profitability at the company level: a gross margin of 83.0% in 2025 and 85.8% in the second quarter of 2026.910 What the filings do give is price and volume. In 2025 volume added 50% to revenue and price took away 6%.11
The growth record separates the lines sharply. Tirzepatide more than doubled in 2025. Verzenio grew 8%. Trulicity has fallen from its 2022 peak of $7,440 million as patients moved to its successor.1213 The rest of the portfolio has held near $18 billion to $20 billion a year since 2022.14
The patent dates are the other axis. Tirzepatide's U.S. compound patent is estimated to run to 2036, Verzenio's to 2031 and Trulicity's to 2027.15
The question the five lines raise together is how quickly Lilly can build a second business of tirzepatide's size before 2036. The measure is the share of revenue from tirzepatide, 64.7% in the June 2026 quarter against 55.1% a year earlier.1617 Rising further means the company is becoming more concentrated, not less.
Tirzepatide keeps gaining share of revenue; the older lines are shrinking or flat, so concentration rises.
One brand approaching half of revenue. Above 50% would make a single label decision or price negotiation a company-level event.
