⚠ Inertia Erodes as Platforms Turn OverLow threat

Broadcom (AVGO) — threat to the moat

The base is lost one retiring platform at a time.

Installed-base inertia protects Broadcom's existing revenue, but it is a wasting asset if the underlying platforms are maturing faster than new ones replace them. Much of the accumulated base sits in networking, broadband, storage, and wireless technologies that are stable or slowly declining, and inertia only delays erosion — it does not prevent a socket from disappearing when the product it lives in is finally retired and its replacement is designed with a clean sheet. A base is defended one socket at a time, and it is also lost one socket at a time.

Semiconductor revenue excluding AI, by quarter ($B)$4.1BQ1 FY25$4.0BQ2 FY25$4.0BQ3 FY25$4.1BQ1 FY26$4.2BQ2 FY26$4.1BQ3 FY26Calc: semiconductor solutions revenue less AI semiconductor revenue; quarterly results releases
Six quarters at about $4.1 billion, no growth at all: the installed base holds, and adds nothing.

The danger is that the protective inertia is strongest exactly where growth is weakest. In Broadcom's mature franchises, the installed base is huge and sticky but the market is not expanding; in the fast-growing AI markets, the base counts for little because the sockets are new and up for grabs. So the inertia stabilizes the slow-growing part of the company while doing little to secure the fast-growing part, which must be won on merit against fresh competition every cycle.

Broadcom manages this by continually refreshing its franchises and by using the cash from mature bases to fund leadership in new ones. That recycling has worked well. But an owner should see installed-base inertia for what it is: a powerful defense of yesterday's revenue that gradually gives way as platforms turn over, and a reminder that Broadcom cannot coast on its incumbency — it must keep winning the new designs that will be tomorrow's installed base — the AI accelerator sockets being today's contest1.
