⚠ Twenty Million Buyers, and No MoreHigh threat

Allegro (ALE) — threat to the moat

Fifteen and a half million Polish buyers in a country of thirty-seven million — the ceiling here is arithmetic, not competitive.

Allegro's active buyers were 20,4 million in the first quarter of 2026, a decline of 0,2% on a year earlier1, and 20,9 million at the end of June, up 1,6%2.

Fifteen and a half million buyers in a country of thirty-seven million: there is no version where this doubles.

For a business whose entire moat is a network effect, that is the most important number it publishes. By June Polish active buyers were up 3,1% to 15,6 million and international buyers down 1,8% to 5,3 million3: the mature market is adding customers faster than the growth market.

The Polish figure carries a ceiling that is arithmetic rather than competitive. Poland has about 37 million people4, of whom some are children and some do not shop online at all. At 15,6 million active buyers Allegro already reaches a large part of the addressable population, and there is no version of the future in which that number doubles.

So growth has to come from the wallet, and it is: GMV per active buyer reached 3 528,2 złoty in the year to June, up 9,8%, and 4 482,3 złoty in Poland5.

It works, and it is a different business from the one the growth story describes. Spend per buyer is bounded by household income and by how much shopping can move online; buyer counts are bounded by population. Allegro is close to the second bound and working on the first.

The international segment was supposed to be the answer. Its buyers fell to 5,3 million, but their spending rose 36,8% to 663,4 złoty each6: that segment is growing on the wallet too.

The number that tests this threat is Polish active buyers, up 3,1% in the year to June. A quarter in which it stops rising is the quarter Allegro becomes a business that can only grow by selling more to the same people — and in the second quarter of 2026 its take rate fell7.

15,6 million at June 2026 (+3,1%) in a country of ~37 million

Growth in Polish buyers is what the network argument needs; the ceiling is arithmetic, and a stall would leave only the wallet.
