Adyen (ADYEN) — threat to the moat
Stripe was built clean in the same era — the architecture is matched, not unique.
The single-platform advantage is decisive against the legacy incumbents but not against a modern rival that built the same way — and Adyen has exactly such a rival in Stripe. Founded in the same era with the same philosophy of building a clean, modern, full-stack platform from scratch, Stripe has spent years developing an architecture that increasingly matches Adyen's coherence and capability, and it has grown into a formidable competitor, especially in North America and among developer-led and platform businesses. The 'no legacy' edge that makes Adyen so superior to Fiserv or Global Payments does nothing against Stripe, which has no legacy either.
This is why the platform moat, though real, is narrow rather than wide. A wide technology moat would be one no competitor could replicate; Adyen's has been substantially replicated by at least one well-funded, technically-excellent peer, and the two now compete directly on increasingly comparable platforms. Where Adyen differentiates against Stripe, it is on execution, enterprise focus, global reach, and specific capabilities rather than on the raw fact of a modern stack, which both possess. Adyen retains real advantages — its enterprise orientation, its unified global platform, its profitability — and the market is large enough for both to grow. But an investor should not mistake the single-platform architecture for an unassailable moat: it is a powerful edge over the old world of payments and a level playing field against the new one, and the most important competitive dynamic for Adyen is not the incumbents it out-architects but the modern rival that architected itself the same way — a rival whose existence is the clearest evidence that the platform advantage, however genuine, can be and has been contested1.
