✦ Adyen Agentic & the AI CheckoutThin moat
Adyen (ADYEN) — the future bets
Adyen built for every agent protocol at once rather than betting on a winner — a cheap option on a channel shift, held by the company best placed to serve it.
If consumers start buying through AI assistants rather than websites, every merchant faces the same problem: their checkout, tax, fulfilment and fraud systems assume a human with a browser. Adyen Agentic, announced June 16, 2026, is the attempt to solve that once. It is three modular layers — Agentic Feed, which pushes live catalogue, price and availability into conversational environments; Agentic Cart, which hooks an agent's request back into existing checkout and order management; and Agentic Payments, which handles token portability, authentication, risk and merchant-of-record status1.
The positioning is deliberately neutral. Rather than betting on which agent platform wins, Adyen built against the competing protocols at once — Google's Universal Commerce Protocol, the Agent Payments Protocol, and OpenAI's Agentic Commerce Protocol — which is the same posture that made the core business valuable: merchants do not want to integrate a new stack for every channel, and Adyen's whole proposition is that they never have to.
The honesty required here is that agentic commerce is currently a very small amount of real spending, and being early to a channel that never materializes is just expense. Adyen's advantage is that the cost of being early is low — one platform, one codebase, features shipped to every merchant at once. Watch for named merchants transacting through Agentic rather than merely integrating it, and watch whether any of it shows up in processed volume. Until consumers actually buy this way, this is a cheap option on a channel shift, held by the company best placed to serve it if it comes.
Building against every competing agent protocol at once is the right posture and costs little on a single codebase, but agentic commerce is barely real spending yet. Nothing observable changes until merchants transact rather than integrate — holding steady as a cheap, well-placed option on a channel that may or may not arrive.
Agentic commerce needs to know who is paying when an AI agent places the order, and Adyen's identity layer already recognises most shoppers. That share holding as agent-led orders grow would show the identity layer carrying over.
