✦ The Computer in Every RestaurantThin moat
McDonald's (MCD) — the future bets
The least glamorous bet is the one that makes the other three work — at this scale, seconds and percentages are the entire game.
The bet with the least glamour and the most operating leverage is infrastructure. Under a multi-year partnership announced with Google Cloud, McDonald's is deploying hardware and software into individual restaurants — edge computing, running applications and AI locally rather than over a distant connection1 — a platform now reaching restaurants for equipment monitoring, operational forecasting and the next generation of ordering technology2.
Why a computer in the back room matters more than it sounds: at McDonald's scale, seconds and percentages are the whole game. A fryer that reports its own impending failure prevents lost sales; forecasting that gets the prep right cuts waste in 45,000 kitchens; an order screen that recommends correctly lifts the average check by pennies that compound into hundreds of millions. This is also the only bet on the page that makes the other three work — the beverages need speed, the loyalty program needs data, and the new restaurants need a system that scales without adding managers.
The honest caution is that restaurant technology has a graveyard of its own: McDonald's ended an earlier AI-drive-thru voice-ordering test after it went viral for the wrong reasons, and every rollout must pass through thousands of independent franchisees who bear the installation cost. Watch for disclosed operating-margin improvement attributed to restaurant technology, and watch service times in the deployed markets. Software that measurably speeds the line is worth more to this company than any new sandwich.
Deployment is genuinely under way — edge hardware in restaurants running monitoring and forecasting — but restaurant technology only counts when it shows up in service times or margins, and neither has yet been attributed to it. The company's own abandoned voice-ordering test is the cautionary precedent. Stable until measurable operating leverage appears.
Edge computing in every restaurant is meant to make a very large system run a little better. Small efficiency gains across this much revenue add up; the test is whether they show in restaurant margins.
