Arista Networks (ANET) — threat to the moat
Whichever standard wins, Nvidia sells it — Arista must win on merit either way.
The Ethernet-versus-InfiniBand shift favors Arista, but Nvidia controls both sides of the debate and is fighting to win either way, which makes the AI-networking prize a contest against a competitor of extraordinary strength rather than a market Arista can simply inherit. On one side, Nvidia sells InfiniBand, the incumbent AI interconnect, and will defend it where it can. On the other, recognizing that the industry is moving to Ethernet, Nvidia built its own high-performance Ethernet offering, Spectrum-X, specifically to capture the Ethernet AI-networking business — so even as Ethernet wins over InfiniBand, Nvidia intends to win the Ethernet. Because Nvidia supplies the GPUs at the center of every AI cluster, it is present in every deployment and can bundle its networking, optimize it with its GPUs, and advocate for the full Nvidia stack — a position of enormous leverage from which to compete against Arista.
This two-sided control means the secular tailwind of Ethernet adoption does not automatically accrue to Arista — it is contested at every step. Arista's advantages are real: it is the Ethernet leader, it has no conflicting GPU interest (so customers wary of an all-Nvidia stack prefer an independent networking vendor), and the open-standard ecosystem and the titans' desire to avoid single-vendor lock-in favor it. And Arista has been winning large AI back-end business on Ethernet. But an investor should recognize that the AI-networking market is a war with Nvidia on both fronts — InfiniBand and Ethernet — fought against a company that owns the GPUs, the narrative, and a competing networking stack, and that can bring the full weight of its AI dominance to bear. Arista is winning the battle today and the structural forces favor it, but the outcome is uncertain and hard-fought, so its AI-networking position — the core of its growth and its valuation — is a contested prize in an ongoing war, not a secured victory — Nvidia fields both InfiniBand and Spectrum-X1.
