✦ Scale-Up Ethernet & the ESUN PushThin moat

Arista Networks (ANET) — the future bets

A well-connected seat at a table where the biggest player owns the room — Ethernet's assault on NVLink runs on a 2027 clock.

The most ambitious bet targets the one network Arista has never sold: the scale-up fabric inside the rack, where accelerators talk to each other at memory speed. That domain belongs to Nvidia's NVLink, with AMD pushing its own alternative — and in October 2025 the industry declared its intention to take it for Ethernet, forming ESUN (Ethernet for Scale-Up Networking) at the Open Compute Project with a roster that says everything: AMD, Arista, Arm, Broadcom, Cisco, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia and OpenAI among the members1. The technical pitch is Ethernet stripped for speed — minimal headers, credit-based flow control, link-layer retries — aiming at eight to nine times the bandwidth per accelerator that scale-out links carry2.

The rack's interior carries an order of magnitude more bandwidth than the networks Arista sells today — which is exactly why Ethernet wants in.

For Arista the logic is completion: win scale-up and every network in the AI data center — inside the rack, across the halls, between the buildings — runs on the company's home protocol. But honesty about the clock and the competition: scale-up on Ethernet is a 2027-and-beyond market, the incumbent's lock is soldered into shipping silicon, and Nvidia sits inside ESUN precisely to make sure openness arrives on its schedule, not Arista's.

Watch the standards cadence — first ESUN framing specs, first merchant scale-up silicon from Broadcom — and watch for the first hyperscaler to deploy an Ethernet scale-up rack in production. Until that proof point exists, this bet is a well-connected seat at a table where the biggest player already owns the room.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

The consortium exists, the specs are drafting, and the case is sound — but nothing ships until 2027 at the earliest, NVLink's lock is soldered into current racks, and Nvidia joined the table precisely to pace the openness. Stable until the first production Ethernet scale-up deployment names itself; that press release is the trajectory change.

Inventories
$2,535.3M at June 2026, from $2,247.1M six months earlier

Stock built ahead of new platforms; inventory rising faster than revenue for several quarters would mean demand is not keeping pace.
